When I haven’t done anything for a long time, I always start small, on paper. - Gerhard Richter
On Paper explores the diverse interpretations and creative potentials inherent in the medium of paper. This online exhibition primarily focuses on artworks created on paper, providing a platform for artists who challenge traditional perceptions of the medium and its possibilities. Featured artists include Madeleine Bialke, Jo Dennis, Yoo Geun-Taek, Norman Hyams, Konstantina Krikzoni, Guillermo Martin Bermejo, Viktor Mattsson, Ella McVeigh, Sunil Padwal, Antonia Rodrian, Adam Shield, Kristian Tourborg and Tesfaye Urgessa.
Departing from traditional views of paper as a commonplace material, the showcased artworks reveal its depth and versatility both as a physical substance and thematic focal point. These artworks, encompassing drawings, pastels, watercolours, gouaches, and three-dimensional pieces, elevate paper from a mere preparatory tool in the studio to fully-fledged artworks in their own right.
The exhibition aims to present a curated selection of works by artists who employ paper in unconventional ways, exploring themes such as temporality, memory, fragility, and resilience. Through a variety of artistic techniques, the artists in On Paper seek to transcend conventional boundaries, encouraging viewers to reconsider the inherent qualities and cultural significance of this venerable material.
On Paper is on view online from May 10 to May 30, 2024.
